woman in bright room holding headVertigo is a sensation of feeling off balance, or like you or the world around you is spinning. While it is a symptom, rather than a condition, it can be very disruptive to daily life. In our practice, we help people just like yourself overcome it by educating them about the condition and explaining exactly how our services could help.

Symptoms of Vertigo

Vertigo is the sensation that you or the environment around you is moving or spinning. Other symptoms associated with vertigo may include:

  • Loss of balance: which can make it difficult to stand or walk
  • Feeling sick or being sick
  • Dizziness
  • High temperature
  • Ringing in your ears or hearing loss

Depending on the underlying condition causing the vertigo, you may experience other symptoms.

Causes of Vertigo

Vertigo is commonly caused by a problem with the way balance works in the inner ear. It can be caused by:

  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV): where certain head movements trigger vertigo symptoms
  • Migraines
  • Ear infection issues

How It Feels

This feeling can be barely noticeable, or it can be so severe that you find it difficult to keep your balance and do everyday tasks. Attacks of vertigo can develop suddenly and last for a few seconds, or they may last much longer. If you have severe vertigo, your symptoms may be constant and last for several days, making normal life very difficult. Because of symptoms, people can often develop neck pain from holding their heads so rigidly.

Treatments for Vertigo

Our team can provide a variety of treatments to help manage the condition. When it is a chiropractic issue, our main treatment will be to adjust the cervical spine to release the pressure that is causing abnormal nerve function in the area. We will work on posture and ensure that activities of daily life do not aggravate or cause symptoms. The Epleys maneuver can often be helpful for symptoms so we teach patients this maneuver.

Intake Process for Care

First, we will go through your history to determine how long you have been dealing with the issue, the severity of the issue, what associated symptoms you are dealing with, and what you are being limited from in life. After this point, we will move into a physical assessment and check posture, balance, range of motion, and feel the neck, head, and jaw to determine where there is dysfunction or pain.

Tips and Coping Strategies for Vertigo

Along with treatment, there are some tips that can help manage vertigo symptoms, including:

  • Lie down in a quiet, dark room with eyes closed and take deep breaths
  • Move head carefully and slowly
  • Sit down if you feel dizzy
  • Turn on lights if you get up at night
  • Use a cane/walking stick to avoid falling if you feel your balance is off
  • Sleep with head slightly raised
  • Get out of bed slowly to adjust
  • Work on relaxation techniques
